Abstract

430,364. Destructive hydrogenation. CHEMICAL REACTIONS, Ltd., 49, London Wall, and BURNS, J., 22, Kelfield Gardens, North Kensington, both in London. Dec. 29, 1933, No. 36627. [Class 32] In the destructive hydrogenation of carbonaceous materials the raw materials are heated with the hydrogen to reaction temperature in a tubular furnace or pipe still and the reaction is completed in a further section of tubes maintained substantially at constant temperature in a separate furnace compartment, the speed of flow of the materials being such that conditions of turbulence are maintained in the tubes. Tar is pumped through a preheating coil 3 and thence into a reaction coil 8. The products pass into a pressure separator 9 from which asphaltic materials are removed through a line 10 while the hydrogenated products pass through a cooler 12 to a high pressure separator 13 from which condensate is passed with release of pressure through a catch pot 17 to a fractionating tower 18. Heavy oil collected at the bottom of the tower 18 is recirculated to the common line 2 together with the gases separated from the tower 13 through a pipe 5 and fresh hydrogen supplied by a pump 6. In a modification the recycled oil is passed through a separate coil in the preheating furnace.
