Abstract

429,719. Feeding webs. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(International Cellucotton Products Co. ; 180, North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A.) Aug. 21, 1934, No. 24150. [Class 100 (i)] [See also Group VI] In a machine for making sanitary napkins means are provided for feeding strips of cushioning material torn off from a continuous roll on to a moving gauze strip. Rolls 27' of cushioning material such as loosely felted cotton are mounted in ball-bearing members engaged by recesses in arms 37 which are urged downwards against the action of springs 40 so that the rolls rest on conveyers 28 and the strip is continuously unwound. When a roll is nearly exhausted the arms 37 are depressed, permitting it to roll back on to supporting brackets 41 arranged to receive the bearings, a new roll being positioned and manually supported until the end of the old roll is reached. The strips pass along metal guide shoots 43 of reducing width which are laterally adjustable and fitted with contact arms adapted to close an electric circuit and stop the machine if the strip feed ceases. The gauze strip is fed from a roll 23<3> over a guide roll 50 to a conveyer belt 51 which travels faster than the cushion strip conveyers 28. The cushion strips 27 pass between feed rolls 52, 53, Fig. 5, and are torn into short lengths by a breaker roll 74 carried from a shaft 68 which is provided with an arm 76 engaged by a rotary cam 77 causing the roll 74 to be pressed intermittently against the strips. To cause the new leading end to follow the gauze strip, a suction box 82 having branches 83, 84 is employed which causes the cushion strip to lie flat on the gauze. Further, the arm 76 carries one of a pair of electric contact elements 85, 86 which, if the arm moves downwards due to rolling of the strip 27 upon the roll 74, engage to close a circuit stopping the machine.
