Abstract

429,016. Screwing-up screws, nuts, &c. ARMSTRONG, WHITWORTH, & CO. (ENGINEERS), Ltd., SIR W. G., and REAVELY, T. C., Scotswood Works, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Sept. 23, 1933, No. 26307. [Class 83 (iii)] In a power-driven screw-driver, spanner, &c. of the kind in which the tool is driven through a frictional slipping clutch arranged so that the torque at which slip takes place is determined by the pressure on the tool, the drive is transmitted from the motor to the tool through a reduction gear whose function is separate from that of the friction clutch. The clutch may be normally engaged by a spring or normally kept open by the spring and closed by pressure on the tool. In one form a portable machine comprises a motor casing 1 and a gear casing 2. The motor shaft 3 carries a clutch part 4, the other part 5 being mounted on a spindle 6 carrying a sun pinion 12. A sleeve 9 carries a planet pinion 13 engaging the pinion 12 and a sun pinion 16 engaging a planet pinion 17 on the tool spindle 15. Internally toothed rings 2a, 2b fixed on the gear casing engage the planet pinions 13, 17. A square or otherwise shaped socket 15b in the tool spindle slidably receives a screw-driver 19 which abuts on a rod 11 slidable in the tool spindle and engages the clutch shaft 6 through a ball thrust bearing 10. A spring 18 normally maintains the clutch 4, 5 in engagement, but increased axial pressure on the screw-driver will increase the pressure between the clutch faces. A sleeve 20 loosely surrounds the tool spindle and centres the driver 19 with respect to the screw being driven. In a modified portable construction, the spring 18 is dispensed with and a spring is inserted in a recess in the clutch shaft 6, the other end of the spring engaging the end of the motor shaft 3 so as normally to maintain the clutch 4, 5 disengaged. For cooling the clutch, in the case of a pneumatic motor, the exhaust air from the motor passes through apertures 23a to a channel 1<a> leading to the clutch and thence to atmosphere by a port 1<b>, and in the case of an electric motor, a fan is mounted on the shaft 3 to supply air to the clutch and thence to atmosphere through the port 1<b>.
