Abstract
1370781 Torque wrench BROOM & WADE Ltd 10 Nov 1971 [10 Nov 1970] 53483/70 Heading B3N [Also in Division F2] A torque applying device comprises a motor 20 and a torque delivery means 22 adapted to shut off the motor at a predetermined torque. The means 22 has a rotor 32 driven by motor spindle 33 through a safety clutch 34. The free end of the rotor is splined to take the sun wheel of an epicyclic gear. A planet carrier 54 has planet wheels 53 and is drivingly connected to an output shaft 57 by a further epicyclic reduction gear 58. The ring gear 59 of the first mentioned epicyclic gear is releasably held against rotation in clutch housing 46. This is achieved by a plurality of balls 10 engaging in sockets in the ring gear. The balls being biased by a spring 65 through a flange 12 and pins 11. At a predetermined torque balls 10 are forced out of engagement with the ring gear. This causes movement of collar 13, bearing 45 and flanged collar 15. Movement of the collar causes pin 16 to move push-rod 17 which opens valve 9. Thus a chamber 8 is vented to atmosphere as is passage 29. Air pressure in chamber 4 moves valve 5 against spring 26 cutting off air to the motor. The position of valve 5 is maintained until valve 3 is closed so that air pressure in chamber 4 can bleed away via capillary hole 7. After such venting spring 26 will return the valve to its start position. Adjustment of the loading of spring 65 is by positioning of collar 74. Safety clutch 34 is set to be effected by a torque higher than said predetermined torque and acts to disengage the drive connection between rotor 32 and spindle 33.
