Abstract

1,038,427. Power wrench. DESOUTTER BROS. Ltd. June 28, 1965 [Aug. 20, 1964], No. 34040/64. Heading B3N. A hand-held power-operated wrench comprises a vane type pneumatic motor 4 which drives a shaft 7 through an epicyclic reduction gear 5, and a nut-engaging wrench 10 driven from shaft 7 through a worm and wheel drive 8, 9. Shaft 7 is splined to a shaft 7b and is slidable thereon, so that when the wrench is at rest, shaft 7 rests against a ball 8a, but under the reaction to the torque applied to the bolt or nut, shaft 7 moves away from the ball and is supported in a needle roller bearing 8b. A rod 7g connects shaft 7 to a transfer valve 25 which co-operates with a poppet valve 30 to control the flow of air to motor 4. In operation, when the torque reaches a predetermined value, shaft 7 moves longitudinally to move rod 7g and actuates valve 25 and the motor stops. Valve 25 can be adjusted to vary the torque by a knob 42e, which rotates a cam 42a to urge the valve 25 axially and vary the position of its parts.
