Abstract

1340650 Pneumatic screwdrivers SCHMID & WEZEL 26 Sept 1972 [30 Sept 1971] 44385/72 Heading B3N A pneumatic screwdriver has a drive shaft 5 and an axially movable tool spindle 6 couplable together against the action of a spring 44 and a device for shutting off a motor 2 at a predetermined torque consisting of a clutch 12 and an operating member 29, balls 30, 31 for a valve rod 34, the clutch is mounted on the tool spindle and has a first clutch half 11 carrying dogs 13 for engagement with dogs 43 of a clutch part 42 connected with drive shaft 5, and engaging members 14, in the form of balls 15, for engagement with abutments 20, in the form of bolts 21, of a second clutch half 17 which is biased by an adjustable spring 45, characterized by the second clutch half having anchorage faces 28, formed as bores 27, for co-operation with the operating member 29 to axially lock the clutch half in an end position disengaged from the first clutch half, in which position the valve rod can move to allow the air supply to the motor to be closed. In operation blade 8 is forced against a screw which in turn moves spindle 6 until dogs 13, 43 are drivingly engaged. Valve rod 34 is also moved axially to move ball 39 against spring 40. At a predetermined torque the second clutch half is moved axially until bores 27 align with balls 30, 31. The pressure on valve rod 34 forces the balls apart into bores 27 to lock the clutch half in a disengaged position. Also ball 39 closes the air inlet to stop the motor. Removal of the tool from the screw allows the parts to return to their starting positions as shown in Fig. 3.
