[Class 45] [See also Groups XVII and XXII] In an appliance for tensioning a hoop-iron tie around a package and securing the overlapping ends by a locking clip, a die-head 25 is provided with serrated grippers 6, 8 for receiving and holding the overlapping parts of the tie with a clip 2 thereon, the grippers and the punch 7 being moved in succession into their operative positions by a single operating member. As shown, the grippers 6, 8 are toothed plungers mounted on springs in the punch 7 and the die 5 respectively and passing through apertures 3 in the opposite faces of the clip 2, but eccentric toothed rollers may be employed. The gripper teeth are shaped to permit tightening of the upper part 1<a> of the tie and to hold both parts 1, 1<a> against slipping back. The operating- handle 10 for the punch and grippers is provided with a recessed cam 11 engaging a roller 12 on the head of the punch. In the position shown the recess 13 in the cam holds the punch in a position in which the grippers engage the tie, and in this position the cutters 28 may hold the clip against lateral displacement; the tie is then tensioned by means of the lever 15, and the lever 10 is then depressed to operate the punch. The lever 10 may be provided with a spring, and the cam 11 with a recess 33 for holding the lever 10 in the extreme raised position. The tensioning device comprises a hand-lever 15 pivoted on the handle 17 of the die-head at 16 and provided with a one-way gripping pawl 20 which is released by a stop 21 when the lever 15 is in the extreme lowered position,
