Class 45 [Also in Group XV] In a device for tightening and sealing metal straps used for packing cases and the like of the type having a ratchet mechanism 19, 20, 20<SP>1</SP> arranged for gripping one of the over-lapping ends of the strap to be tightened and to move it over the other end to tighten the strap, die mechanism for deforming a metal seal placed over so as to embrace the tighened ends of the strap and a common lever 30 for operating the ratchet feed mechanism and the die mechanism, the die mechanism comprises pivotally mounted gripping jaws 40 and slidably mounted deforming die members 42, 43, the jaws 40 being operated by the initial dieoperating movement of the operating handles to grip the seal and the deforming die members being operated on the further movement of the. operating handles to deform the seal. The tightening mechanism comprising two serrated discs 20, 20<SP>1</SP> and a ratchet wheel 19 mounted on a shaft 14 in the forked end 13 of a base member and it is operated by a pawl 22 carried on the die mechanism which is pivoted on the shaft 14. The ratchet is held against back rotation by a pawl on the. base. The shaft 14 also carries a cam 15 which can be rotated by a crank 16 to align the overlapping ends of the bands to be tensioned beneath the die mechanism. The die mechanism is pivotally attached to the shaft 14 by side plates 18; 18<SP>1</SP> and carried by a shaft 28 on which the handle 30 is rotatably mounted by means of its forked end. When this handle is used for operating the tightening wheels 20, 20<SP>1</SP>, it is held against movement relative to the die mechanism in one direction by an extended back wall 27 of the die mechanism and in the other direction by the engagement of a spring pressed plunger in the handle 30 which engages a shoulder 35 on a member 32. The member 32 is rotatably mounted on a disc pinned to the handle 30 and the parts 31, 32 together form an eccentric. The member 32 is connected to a slidably mounted die block 34 which carries the die members 42, 43 and by forcing the plunger over the shoulder 35 the handle 30 may pivot about the shaft 28 to operate the die block, the die mechanism having being prevented from movement by engaging the base member. The two gripping jaws 40, Fig. 4, are pivotally mounted, one on each side of the die mechanism and the forked end of the handle 30 during its movement about the shaft 28 forces the upper ends of the two gripping jaws 40 apart and so forces the lower ends together underneath a seal to clamp the seal so that the deforming die members 42, 43 on the die block 34 which is operated by the same movement of the handle, can distort the seal.
