Abstract

428,309. Respiratory appliances ; pneumatic massage. LACY, L. R., 52, Central Buildings, Southwark Street, London. Dec. 20, 1933, No. 35852. [Class 81 (ii)] A mouth - piece 1 centrally bored and having grooves 2, 3, is connected through a medicated filter 8 to a bulb 11 with a non- return valve 12 and thence through a tube 14 and a second filter 15 to flexible tubes 17<1>, 181 carrying nose pieces 21, 22. The filter 8 comprises a chamber 5, a central tube 6, and a perforated diaphragm 7 retaining absorbent material from which volatile medicament is withdrawn by injection during use. The filter 15 is similar, the casing being in two interconnected parts and the central tube 16 being screw-threaded. Similar filters 23, 24, are provided on the nozzles 21, 22. Taps 10, 13 are provided on each side of the bulb 11. The tubes 17<1>, 18<1> are connected by rubber bands 25, or spring clips, with a bowed spring 25<1>. In use air blown through the apparatus from the mouthpiece entrains medicament from the filters and is injected into the nose, or the tap 1 may be closed, or the mouthpiece closed by the tongue, and the bulb 11 used as the air forcing means. Alternatively the mouthpiece may be inserted further into the mouth and gripped by the groove 3, the throat being then treated by sucking air through the apparatus, (the valve 12 being closed by the finger), or by closing tap 13 and using the bulb 11 as the air-forcing means. By opening tap 11 and using the bulb, the nose and throat may be treated simultaneously. The nose pieces 21, 22 may be replaced by ear pieces, comprising rounded ended tubes bent inwardly toward one another, and the apparatus employed for pneumatic massage of the ears by breathing in and out of the mouthpiece, the valve 12 being sealed by the finger, or the bulb 11 being detached. The apparatus is also useful for exercise of the lungs.
