[Class 51 (ii)] A continuous furnace for the heat-treatment of metals is provided with external flues i extending around the working-chamber c transversely to its longitudinal axis each flue being provided with two burner openings 0<1>, 0<2>, through which alternating supplies of gas issue, and with two connections, one adjacent each burner opening, leading to regenerators k<1>, k<2> connected alternately to a source of fresh air supply and to the chimney. Preheating, annealing, quenching, and cooling zones are provided in the furnace.
