Abstract

427,118. Spring upholstery. DRUMMOND, D. R., Rosedene, Salisbury Road Holland-on-Sea. Oct. 19,1933, No. 28965. [Class 52 (iv)] [See also Groups XXXII and XXII] A coiled compression spring particularly for use in upholstery and formed from a single length of wire comprises two series of coaxial oppositelypitched convolutions, the convolutions of one series having a mean diameter greater than that of the other by about twice the thickness of the wire, or the convolutions of the two series having the same diameter while their axes are relatively displaced by about the thickness of the wire. The spring may be of cylindrical, conical, pyramidal, waisted, or other shape, or fusiform. The Figure shows a pyramidal spring in which the two parts 3, 4 are entwined at the points 5 where they intersect. A waisted spring is also illustrated. In forming a spring surface, for example, of a seat or mattress, a plurality of springs may be disposed so that the plane in which the two series of convolutions of each spring intersect is at an angle to the plane of intersection of the series of convolutions of any adjacent spring.
