Abstract

426,895. Permutation locks. PODERZAJ, I., 31, Westbourne Grove, Queens Road, London. Feb. 19, 1934, No. 5408. [Class 44] In a permutation lock, hollow cylindrical elements k arranged one within the other are mounted for rotation in a cylindrical case g, which is non-rotatable in the lock casing b but is adapted to be moved inwards with the elements k when longitudinal holes l in the latter are aligned with pins m carried by rings n fixed in the lock casing. The rings n may be secured in the lock casing by a perforated plate v through which the pins m pass, this plate being fixed in the lock casing by a screw w and held against turning by a projection x, so that it may be detached to allow of rearrangement of the pins m. The bottom of the case g is perforated to receive the pins m and also to hold the cylinders k against accidental rotation by co-operation with spring-pressed balls u therein. The cylinders k, which may be provided with operating projections t, are held in the case g by a grub-screw p engaging a groove q and by a flange r on a screw s, and are separated from one another by a fixed wall z. Fig. 2 shows in section a padlock having a sliding shackle, the legs a of which are locked by tongues d adapted to be disengaged therefrom by pressing in the case g against a spring y. In another construction, (not shown), the case g is mounted on a knob spindle to prevent, when desired, inward movement of the spindle to engage its end with a bolt follower and thus render the handle operative to withdraw the bolt. In another construction, Figs. 15 and 17, a revolving barrel lock 5 is secured to the case g and when it is in its outer position, as shown, a pinion 13 thereon meshes with a rack on a bolt 2 and a cam 32 engages under a pivoted lock tumbler 31 so that rotation of the lock barrel 5 withdraws the bolt 2, which from the other side can be withdrawn by a knob 2a after the tumbler 31 has been lifted manually. When the cylindrical elements have been set, the lock barrel 5 can be pushed in to engage a rod 6 thereon with a knob operated follower N so as to retract a latch bolt 12. The lock casing is formed in two parts 14, 15 which are held together by pins 17 carried by springs 18 and adapted to be disengaged by pressing in knobs 19. In a modification, the bolt 2 is omitted and the cylindrical elements k, Fig. 13, are adapted to be set by a single operating disc 3 having recesses to co-operate with spring-pressed pawls 9 mounted in the elements k, the latter being set by opposite rotations of the disc 3. In another construction, Fig. 19, a pivoted keyhole cover 22 is retained over the keyhole 20 by a spring- pressed pin 24 engaging a hole 25 in the keyhole bush 21 fzom which it is disengaged by a pin 26 when the cover 22 and bush 21 are pushed in after the elements k are set by a single disc 3. The casing b is shown as that of a padlock having a pivoted shackle which when closed engages with a screwed ring 28 to prevent detachment of the case g.
