Be it known that I, GUSTAV Wrennn, a German subject, residing at- Baudette, 1n the county of Beltrami and State of Mmnesota, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Door-Locks, of whlch the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in door locks and more particularly to a lock of this character of the combination or permutation type.
An object of my invention resides 1n providing means by which the bolt securing means can be set to positively secure the bolt against release even by manipulation of the combination parts, may be'shifted toa second extreme position to release the bolt'securing means so that the lock maybe used after the manner of an ordinary spring latch, and is further adjustable to a position intermediate between the two extremes in which the parts will operate after the manner of a mght latch and when the bolt has been thrown, it may be released by proper manipulation of the combinatlon means from the outer side of thedoor.
With the above and other objects in view, which will be in part described and in part understood by the specification, drawings, and claims, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The forward edge of the casin 1 has an opening 5 formed therethrough or the reception of the bolt 6, which bolt at its outer end is beveled diagonally across to take the form of the bolt of a spring latch, and the inner end of the bolt 6 is provided with a slotted opening 7 through which the pin 8 carried by the casing passes to thus hold the bolt to have sliding movement in a fixed path. A leaf spring 9 is caught under a hook 10 provided in the casing and is swung outwardly by a lug 11 so that it bears against the inner end of the bolt 6 and thus resiliently forces the bolt outwardly to such a position that further movement is limited by abutment of the pin 8 against the inner end of the slotted opening 7. A bolt releasing member 12 is suitably mounted in bearing openings rovided in the casing and in the cover p ate 4: so that it is disposed adjacent the bolt 6 and a finger 13 is provided on this bolt receiving member to be loosely fitted in the opening 14 formed in he bolt, so that as the bolt releasing member is turned in a counterclockwise direction, as the parts are illustrated in Fig. 3, the bolt 6 will be withdrawn against the tension of the leaf spring 9 an the beveled end will be retracted into the casing. The bolt releasing member 12 is opening or an opening of other polygonal form, for the rece tion of the knob spindle 15, and the kno s 16 and 17 are provided on the ends of this spindle to be disposed on the outer and the inner sides of the door.
With the parts arranged in the manner as set forth, a structure is provided which to all intents and purposes is substantially identical with the usual form of spring latch, and without additional restraining 1 bolt and with its free end disposed to normally bear against the inner side of the bolt. The bolt shank is notched as shown at 19, and when the spring 18 has unrestrained movement, it moves to engage at its free end behind the shoulder formed by the notching of the same and thus positively locks the bolt against being withdrawn through turning of the knobs 16 or 17. bolt and the lock structure for use upon doors closing either inwardly or outwardly, it is of course essential that the bolt 6 be reversible, to dispose the beveled side of the end thereof properly, and with this purpose in view, I provide a notch 20 on the opposite side of the bolt shank corresponding in its position to the location of the notch 19 and shape the opening 14 to present an equally operative form on both upper and lower sides of the shank. To change the bolt, it is only necessary to remove the cover plate 4, and then raise the bolt 6 from the position in which it is fitted within the opening 5 and over the pin 8, following which thebolt is turned over or reversed and is again fitted in the same position.
It will of course be understood that under normal conditions the spring 18 will be engaged within the notch 19 or 20, and will hold the bolt 6 positively against movement to the released position, and as the combination means, which will be hereinafter more fully described is intended for opening of the lock only from the outer side of the door, it is essential that some means be provided to release the spring 18 from that side of the door on which the casing 1 is mounted, and it is preferable that the means be so constructed that the spring 18 can be positively locked in the bolt securing position and can be left free to act through its own resiliency. 'VVith the above in view, I mount a shaft 21 between the inner side of the easing 1 and the cover plate 4 and provide thereon what might be designated as a tripping member 22, which is made up of the spokes radiating from a hub mounted on the .1/i'shaft 21 and a split rim. The split rim is so shaped at the free end that one end is bent outwardly as shown at 23 whereas the other end is bent inwardly as indicated at 24, and thus when the tripping member 22 is mounted with the main portion of the rim substantially in line with the free end of the spr1ng18,the spring will be received between the ends 23 and 24 and will then be free to act on its own natural resiliency, or when the tripping member is turned in one direct-ion or the other the spring will be shifted under the exertion of a cam action thereagainst by either the ends 23 or 24 in accordance with the direction in which the member .22 is turned. When the tripping member 22. is turned in a clockwise direction, as the parts are illustrated in Fig. 3, the end 24 thereof will engage with the spring 18 on that side which is adjacent the bolt 61 and in consequence the spring 18- will be forced out to be disengaged from the notch in the shank of the bolt in which relation the spring will be positively held until the tripping-member is again shifted. Upon turning of the tripping member in the opposite direction or in a counter clockwise movement, the end 23 engages on the opposite side of the spring 18 and forces the same inwardly to positively lock the spring against movement to a position that it may be disengaged from the notch to the bolt, and of course it will be understood that when the parts are as shown in Fig. 4, the spring 18 can be freely moved from the notch. As has been stated, it is preferable that the extending portion of the tripping member 22 be roughened to give a surface for manual manipulation stop 26 will of course act as a guide in the setting of the parts.
