Filed June 16, 1931 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Feb. 21, 1933 JOHN I. W. CARLSON, OF SCOTTDALE, PENNSYLVANIA LO CK Application filed June 16,
This invention relates to looks, and has for its object the production of a simple and efficient lock which may be opened by either a combination means or a key. 1
Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and efficient lock specially constructed so as to permit the operation of the lock either by a key, or by the manipulation of a desired combination means, whereby the locking bolt and bolt casing may be shifted bodily within the lock casing, by turning the door knob.
Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and eflicient lock consisting of a minimum number of parts and which may be manufactured at a minimum cost.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the lock showing the graduated combination discs, the key lock and relative location of the knob handle;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through the lock casing, certain portions of the locking mechanism being shown in side elevation, the locking mechanism being shown in a locked position;

may be placed in any desired or convenient position upon the door, the casing being either placed in one side of the door or mitered therein without departing from the spirit of the invention. The casing 1 is pro vided with a cover plate 2, which casing may be secured in any suitable or desired means to the casing 1, such for instance as by means of the screws 8. The usual keeper at is carried by the door jamb 5, and is provided with i a socket 6 for the purpose of receiving the locking bolt 7.
The locking bolt frame 8 supports the locking bolt 7, which locking bolt 7 extendsthrough the aperture 9 formed in oneside edge of the casing 1, in alignment with the socket 6 so as to permit the bolt 7 to pass through the casing 1 and lit in the socket and hold the door 10 upon which the lock casing is mountedin a locked position with a" respect to the door jamb 5. This bolt frame Sis provided with a tumbler receiving pocket 11 formed therein which is normally closed bymeans of a cover plate 12. This cover plate may be secured in any suitable or desired manner to the bolt frame 8, such for instance, aslby means of the screws 13.
The tumbler supporting shaft 14 is extended through the apertures 15 and 16 formed in the bolt frame 8 and cover plate 12 respectively, and this particular supporting shaft 14; is provided with an enlarged knob 17 formed at one end having a graduated disc 18, which knob 17 and graduated disc 18 .fit upon the outer face of the face plate 2 of the lock casing 1, and facilitate'the operation of the combination look as is usual with devices of this type. The face plate is suitably marked by numerals or otherwise indicated to permit the operator to turn the o disc to the desired position for the purpose of operating the look. This tumbler supporting shaft 14: is provided with a longitudinally extending rib 19 which is adapted to engage suitable lugs 20 formed upon the periphery of the centrally located apertures 21 of the tumbler discs 22. Any suitable or desired number of tumbler discs 22 may be employed and by rotating the tumbler supporting shaft 14 in the desired direction and for the desired distance, the tumbler discs 22 may be brought into proper position so as to cause the bolt receiving notches 23 thereof to be brought into registration in such a position as is shown in Figures 3 and 5 of the drawings. The shaft 14 carries at its opposite end a knob 19 to permit the operation of the shaft from the inside of the door.
The bolt housing or frame 8 is provided with a longitudinally extending notch 24 formed at the rear end thereof which is adapted to register with the notches 23 when the tumbler discs 22 are moved to the proper or desired position for the purpose of opening the lock. The bolt frame 8 is provided with a rearwardly extending ledge portion 25 upon which ledge portion 25 is adapted to rest the key actuated bolt 26 hereinafter described.
As shown in the drawings, the bolt frame 8 may be provided upon the lower face thereof or in any desired or convenient location with a plurality of closely arranged and spaced lugs 27, which lugs 27 are adapted to be engaged by a rollback 28 carried by the knob actuated cylinder 29, which cylinder 29 is carried by the squared shank 30 of usual door knob construction 31. The spring 32 is mounted within the casing 1 and normally engages one side of the rollback 28 and holds the same in a vertical position so as to normally urge the bolt frame 8 to a locked position such as is shown in Figure 2 of the drawm s.
Tf it is so desired, this particular structure may be eliminated from the look without departing from the spirit of the invention, but it has been found convenient and advisable to provide this construction just described to facilitate the operation of the lock through the medium of the door knob 31.
In order to permit the operation of the lock through the medium of the usual key and cylinder locking structure, there is provided a cylinder lock 32 of any suitable or desired type which is adapted to receive a key 33 for the purpose of permitting the rotation of the shaft 34, thereby permitting the swinging of the key operated bolt 26 to the position shown in full lines in Figure 2, or to the vertical position indicated by dotted lines in this figure out of the path of movement of the bolt frame 8. A suitable knob 35 is carried by the opposite end of the shaft 34 so as to permit the operation of the shaft from the inside of the door without the necessity of operating the key 33. This lock 32 may be, as stated above, of any suitable or desired type of the cylinder lock structure without departing from the spirit of the invention. The key operated bolt 26 is carried by a barrel 36 which is provided with a flat surface 37 upon one side, and an adjoining flat surface 38 arranged at right angles to the flat surface 37. A flat spring 39 is carried within the casing 1 and is adapted to engage the respective flat surfaces 37 and 38 and permit the holding of the key controlled bolt 26 either in a horizontal or vertical position such as is shown in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings and indicated by dotted lines in Figure 2.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that a very simple and efficient means has been produced for facilitating the operation of the lock either through the operation of the may be employed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
It should also be understood that certain detailed changes in the mechanical construction may be employed so long as these changes fall within the scope of the appended claims. It should be understood, however, that the present invention relates particularly to the type of lock which may be actuated through the operation of the key controlled bolt or through the operation of the tumbler discs by operating the proper combination provided for through the manipulation of the knob 17.
It should be further understood that when the tumbler discs are moved so as to have the notches 23 register with the notch formed in the lock frame 8, the entire lock frame carrying the bolt 7 may be shifted longitudinally within the casing or frame 1,
due to the fact that the tumbler supporting shaft 14 is slidably mounted within the longitudinally extending slots 40 formed in the frame or casing 1, and cover or face plate 2, the door 10 also beinglongitudinallyslotted as indicated at 41 to permit the proper shifting of the shaft 14 longitudinally within the slots 40 and 41, which slots register as clearly shown in the drawings. As the bolt frame 8 is shifted longitudinally within the casing or frame 1, it will be seen that the key controlled bolt 26 may pass into the notches and 24 due to the fact that this bolt normally rests upon the ledge 25.
The cylinder or barrel lock 32, as well as the knob 35, which permits of the operation of the key controlled bolt 26 on the inside of the door may be constructed in a similar manner to that as described in my co-pending application filed June 16, 1931, Serial Number 544,846, and relating to a combination and key controlled latching mechanism for looks.
When it is desired to operate the look through the medium of a key, the key may be manipulated within the cylinder lock 32 so as to cause the bolt 26 to extend in a vertical position such as is shown in dotted lines in Figure 2, whereupon the bolt 7 and frame 8 may be bodily moved longitudinally of the slots l0 and d1, thereby drawing the bolt 7 out of the notch or pocket 6 of the keeper, in this way permitting the door to be swung to an open position. Furthermore, when the key controlled bolt 9.6 is in a position as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2, the bolt frame 8 as well as the bolt 7 carried thereby may be readily moved to an open position by the operation of the knob merely by swmging the rollback 28 to the position shown in Figure 3.
It should be understood that the present lock may be used upon any suitable or d sired structure such as a door, drawer, or
other device adapted to be locked, without departing from the spirit of'the invention.
