[Class 100 (ii)] Inking-apparatus for use with intaglio printing - plates includes a pair of scrapers which are adapted to be trailed over the plate alternatively in opposite directions. The scrapers 12, 13, Fig. 2, are carried by a shaft 10 oscillatable in side frames 6 supported by rollers 9 travelling on rails 4 secured to the sides of the bed-plate on which the intaglio plate 1 is clamped. The shaft 10 carries at each end a notched projection 11 with which is adapted to engage a spring-pressed plunger 16 to lock the shaft in position with one of the scrapers in contact with the plate according to the direction of motion. At each end of the rails 4, cams 20 are adjustably secured to engage with pins 24 carried by the plungers and withdraw the plungers from engagement with the notches in the projections 11 and permit the shaft 10 to be rocked by the engagement of pins 26 on the projections with stops 27. Pinions may be mounted on the ends of the shaft 10 to engage either directly or through idlers, with racks located parallel to the rails 4 so as to prevent the carriage from becoming skewed. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the scrapers 87 are mounted separately on rods 85 oscillatable in the carriage, the rods being provided with gears meshing with racks 93 carried by arms 90 pivoted in the carriage. The arms 90 are connected by a rod 92 which serves as a handle for traversing the carriage across the plate, the movement of the handle relative to the pivot 91 raising and lowering the scrapers. An inking-roller 95 may be mounted in the carriage, and means for holding it out of operative position may be provided.
