Abstract

Ketene is produced by passing the vapour of a compound such as acetone through a reaction chamber at at least 675 DEG C., preferably 750--850 DEG C., the time of contact of the vapour with the high temperature zone being less than 1 second, preferably 0,015--0,05 second, the vapours issuing from the reaction chamber being immediately cooled. The cooling is preferably to below 600 DEG C. and may be effected by contact with liquid acetone or by passing into a water-cooled condenser. The reaction chamber may be of copper, bronze, silver, quartz, or sillimanite, but materials containing nickel and iron, as well as nickel chromium alloys, should be avoided. A copper tube of one-eighth inch internal diameter is preferred.
