Abstract
425,413. Glass manufacture. TRIPLEX SAFETY GLASS CO., Ltd., 1, Albemarle Street, Piccadilly, London, SCORAH, L. V. D., and WILSON, J., Triplex Works, Eccleshall Road, King's Norton, Birmingham. Sept. 11, 1933, No. 25170. [Class 56] A method of forming a coherent foraminous mass of glass, silica, or other vitreous material, consists in packing a ring of vitreous material with elements which are regular in size and shape, and then heating the mass until incipient fusion takes place and the elements become united to one another along their contacting surfaces. The resulting porous mass may be used as a filtering layer, as a packing for gas-washing apparatus, or for ornamental purposes. The Figure shows a glass ring 11 packed with elements 12 consisting of pieces of glass tube of narrow bore. The assembly is placed on a sheet of asbestos and is heated until the tubes 12 become fused to one another and to the ring 11. Glass balls or beads may be used instead of the tubes 12, and the ring 11 may be of conical or other shape to form a removable diaphragm for use in chemical apparatus.
