Abstract

426,269. Colour screens. HOLIDAY, E. R., 13, Airlie Gardens, Kensington, London. Sept. 30, 1933, No. 26953. [Class 97 (i)] In a colour screen of the kind comprising a layer of coloured liquid, the thickness of which can be varied, a deformable tube filled with fluid engages the periphery of at least one of the two transparent plates between which the coloured liquid is contained, and means are provided for varying the pressure of the fluid within the tube so as to effect relative movement of the transparent plates. In the form shown, the coloured liquid itself forms the pressure fluid. Two thin corrugated metal rings 1 are joined together at their outer edges and have their free inner edges secured to metal rings 2 to which the transparent plates 3 are cemented so as to project inwardly beyond the rings. The interior of the chamber formed by the rings 1 and plates 3 is filled with the colour filter liquid and is connected by a tube 5 to a pump &c. At minimum pressure the resilience of the plates 1 holds the plates 3 in contact, and by increasing the pressure the plates can be separated as desired. In a modification the edges of the plates 3 are secured to a spring strip tending to separate them and closing the space between them. Rubber &c. tubes are arranged between one plate and a fixed frame against which the other plate bears. By pumping air &c. into the rubber tubes the plates are brought closer together.
