Abstract
A sheet of fibrous material such as paper or fabric of considerable length is impregnated with a preferably aqueous solution of the initial elementary substances of a synthetic resin, whereupon, prior to drying, the sheet is wound into a roll in order to avoid vaporization of volatile initial substances during the condensation which is effected to such an extent that in the subsequent drying and final heating, vaporizable initial substances are no longer present. Condensation may be effected at room temperature or by heating. suitable synthetic resins are condensation products of formaldehyde or furfural with phenol, cresol, urea or thiourea. Examples describe impregnating paper with a solution of cresol, formalin and hexamethylenetetramine, winding on a cylinder to form a roll, heating at 75 DEG C. for 24 hours to effect the condensation and drying by leading the length of paper through a heated chamber or in vacuo at a low p temperature. Tubes may be made by winding the dried intermediate product on a core and heating, if desired, under pressure. Compound sheets may be formed by compressing a plurality of layers at high temperature and pressure. Moulded articles may be made by dividing the dried intermediate product into small pieces and forming by heat and pressure. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also drying an impregnated breadth of paper by leading it through a closed furnace which fits the paper so exactly that no volatile substances escape. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
