Abstract

<PICT:0458238/IV/1> Ring-shaped tubes of regenerated cellulose, particularly round sausage casings are prepared by subjecting a coiled tube which is still moist and in a blown out condition, to drying, firstly on the inner side of the coil and then all over. The tube may, for example, be wound in the form of a helix on a grooved drying roller, and when the inner side has dried, be dried all over by means of hot air on the same or another roller. Advantageously, the first drying on the inner side of the coil takes place in an atmosphere of relatively high moisture content and at a temperature of 100 DEG C. and the final drying takes place at a lower temperature, e.g. 60 DEG C. The moist tube from the reel a passes between nip rollers b and spirally over the drying roller which is divided internally into two portions, the first c<1> being heated and the second c<2> unheated. The roller is enclosed by a casing which also is divided into two portions, the first d<1> which encloses c<1> being supplied with moist air, and the second d<2> which encloses c<2>, with hot air. The coil, after blowing up with air, is passed between nip rollers e and wound up on f in such manner as to retain the ring or coil shape of the tube. Conveniently, the tube is formed by extrusion from a nozzle shaped in such manner that one part of the wall is thicker than the others and this part is placed against the roller during drying.
