[Class 85] A contractible sheet metal lining for underground roadways and tunnels comprises initially spaced arcuate units yieldably supported by clamping members to permit peripheral contraction under squeeze of the surrounding strata. In Figs. 2 and 4, cambered arcuate units 1 have beaded edges 2 embraced by clamps 3, 4, 5, the clamps 3 initially supporting the lower edge of the units clear of the ground and a space 9 being initially left at the tunnel crown between adjacent units. The beaded edges 2 may be formed by wrapping said edges over round, square or other section bars. Alternately the edges 2 may be flanged for bolting to adjacent units with or without interposed yieldable members 18, Fig. 16, which may be embraced by U -members 17. In Fig. 13, the plates are formed with central beads 12 which are embraced by connecting clamps 13. In other forms, the plates are formed with inwardly or outwardly open channels 14, Fig. 14, receiving the yielding connecting means 15, the grip being adjusted by bolts 16. In Fig. 20, a yielding member 24 telescopes within a socket 25 bolted to the plate. The linings may be applied to arched circular or other roadways.
