Abstract
<PICT:0424921/IV/1> Wood pulp &c. is chlorinated by dispersing gaseous, elementary chlorine under pressure in a liquid, e.g. water, in which it is relatively unreactive, in excess of the solubility of the chlorine in the water &c., bringing such chlorine water &c. into contact with the pulp &c. under less pressure, the chlorine being delivered into the pulp in a very finely dispersed condition, and being chemically absorbed thereby. The chlorine under pressure passes through a valve 8 and pipes 6, 9<a>, 9<b> to ejectors 5 supplied with water through pipes 10, 11, the pressures being indicated by gauges 7 and 12 respectively, the mixture flowing through pipes 14 and perforated pipes or ejectors 4 to a conventional bellmer engine. In an example, 5 tons of air-dried hemlock pulp is circulated once round the bellmer engine each 3\ba1/2\be--8 minutes and treated with 10 lbs. of chlorine per minute for 22--25 minutes at 35--90 DEG F.
