Abstract
<PICT:0424645/III/1> In a cyclic process for distilling and cracking tars, oils, &c. of the type described in Specification 337,581, [Class 32], in which the incoming crude materials and the liquid products produced in the plant are led side by side into a constant level tank where they are immediately mixed so that the hot products dehydrate and top the crude materials, the rate of flow of the mixed materials through the plant is controlled thermostatically. Crude tar fed from a tank 1 through pipes 2, 3 is led into a column 7 through a pipe 5 controlled by a thermostatic valve 6 so that it enters side by side and mixes with the liquid products of the process flowing from a vapour box 8 through a pipe 9. The mixed materials flow over plates to the bottom of the column and vapours evolved are p led off through a pipe 24 and condenser 25 to a receiver 26 while the residual material is pumped by a pump 12 through lines 11, 13 and a heating coil 14 to the vapour box 8 from which vapours are removed through a line 21 and condenser 22 to a receiver 23. The distillates obtained may be cracked by passage through a second similar unit. Part of the residual liquid may be led through a pipe 17 to the lower compartment 10 of the column 7.
