Hydrocarbons, cracking. - In a process for cracking oils of the tube and drum type the oil while at cracking temperature is agitated either by passing it through a tubular cooling apparatus under conditions of turbulent flow or by mechanical agitation. The raw material is deprived of its volatile fractions by passage through heat exchangers 20, 16 and then flows to a container 33 from which it is pumped by a pump Z through cracking coils 61, 71. 81, the temperature being kept lower in the coil 71 than the coils 61, 81 with corresponding variation of pressure. The products from the coil 81 are passed under turbulent flow through a coil 10 in which the temperature is reduced, while being kept in the cracking range, into an insulated reaction drum 11. The vapours produced in the drum 11 are led through a pipe 12, a heat ecxhanger 4, a pipe 13 and a vaporizer 14 into contact with the raw material in heat exchanger 16 and the liquid fraction produced is transferred to the container 33 and retreated as previously described. The vapour fractions are led through a pipe 17 to a rectifier 18 down which is passed a spray of gasoline from a pipe 22 and part of the condensate is recirculated through a pipe 28 and a boiler 44. In the rectifier 18 the products are separated into a vapour fraction which is passed through a pipe 19, a heat exchanger 20, a pipe 24 and a cooler 25 to a storage tank 27, and a liquid fraction collected in a tank 35.
