Abstract
<PICT:0370591/III/1> Oils are cracked by direct contact with heated metallic liquid, e.g. mercury, by preheating the oil and mixing it with mercury heated to a higher temperature, the mixed oil and mercury being conveyed in a confined stream so that they are maintained in the liquid phase. Oil preheated in coils 3, 14 is delivered to a heating coil 18 where it is mixed with mercury preheated in coils 33, the coils 14, 18, 33 being heated in the same furnace and the diameter of the coil 18 being greater than that of the other coils so that when the oil and the mercury are mixed they are dispersed and the pressure is reduced. The mixed stream passes through a pressure reduction valve 19 and impinges on a baffle plate 20 the vapours evolved being fractionated in a dephlegmator 4. Uncondensed vapours pass off through a pipe 21 to a condenser 22 and the condensate is removed through a valve 26 or partly returned to the system through a pipe 61 either as reflux to the dephlegmator through valves 64a, 64b, 64c, or to the heating system through a pipe 63<1> and valve 63<11>. The condensed mercury and oil separate in layers at the bottom of the dephlegmator 4, the mercury being withdrawn through a pipe 36 while the oil residues are delivered through a pipe 38 to a flashing chamber 39 from which vapours pass off through a pipe 45. Steam may be introduced through a line 51.
