Abstract

293,829. Pratt, C. J. July 13, 1927, [Convention date]. Hydrocarbons, cracking. - In a process for obtaining oils of low boiling-point suitable as motor fuels, by first heating crude oils in a lowtemperature furnace, passing the vapours to a fractionating tower and cracking the condensate obtained in a high-ternperature furnace, the vapours from the two furnaces are blended in a mixing vessel which they enter through opposed inlets separated by baffle plates. The crude oil contained in a tank A preheated by passage through one or both of the coils 7, 11 situated in a fractionating tower B is pumped through a pipe 16 to the coils 17 of a low-temperature furnace C where it is heated to 400‹ F. The products pass to a mixing vessel D from which the vapours pass through a pipe 20 and coil 21 into the tower B in which they are partially condensed, the condensate accumulating on a division-plate 27 and overflowing through a pipe 28 into the lower part R of the tower from which it is pumped into a high-temperature cracking coil 32 heated above 1100‹ F. The products from this coil pass through a pipe 34 and coil 35 into the mixing vessel D where the vapours produced in the coils 17, 22 are brought into intimate contact by means of baffle plates. The final products pass off at the top of the tower 13 through a pipe 37 and are cooled in a condenser G, the condensate being collected in a tower H while the incondensible gases are drawn off by a blower 42 and may be used in the burners 46, 46<1>. The headers 6, 8 connecting the coils 7, 11 to the tank A and the pipe 16 are provided with valves 5, 9, 12, 14 so that the flow of oil therethrough may be regulated and a portion returned if required through a pipe 15 to the tank A.
