[Class 4] [See also Group XXXIV] Hydraulic brake apparatus comprises a valve for returning liquid from one or more brakes to the reservoir to permit release of the brakes irrespective of movement of the master piston, the piston being double-ended so that during the return stroke, liquid is forced into the system to compensate for the liquid that has returned to the reservoir. The valve may be operated by the rudder bar of an aircraft. The apparatus shown comprises a double-ended piston K\ K<2> actuated by a lever 5. The pipe connections P<1>, P<2> leading to two brakes which may be those of the wheels of an aircraft or a vehicle are adapted to be connected to the cylinder space Z<1> by a cock 4 which is provided with two through passages 41, 4<11> and also with passages 8, 8<1> communicating with the reservoir 2 and which may register respectively with the connections P<1>, P<2>. The lever 6 of the cock 4 may be connected to the rudder bar of the aircraft. A passage 10 provided with a non-return valve connects the chambers Z<1>, Z<2>. A passage 12 is uncovered in the release position of the pistons, to connect the reservoir to the chamber Z<1>. When the piston is moved to the left, liquid is forced through one or both of the connections P<1>, p<2> according to the position of the cock 4 and by subsequent movement of the cock one or other of the brakes may be released by registering one of the passages 8, 81 with the corresponding connection P<1> or P2. When the piston is moved to the left, liquid is drawn into the chamber Z<2> from the reservoir through a check-valve V. When the piston is returned liquid is forced from chamber Z' to chamber Z<1> through the passage 10 to compensate for any liquid that has been directly returned to the reservoir 2 through the passages 8, 8<1> of the cock 4, excess of liquid in chamber Z<2> being returned to the reservoir through a relief valve 9.
