Abstract

423,940. Cutting extruded bars of plastic material. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Millbank, London.- (African Explosives & Industries, Ltd. ; Chamber of Mines Building, Hollard Street, Johannesburg, South Africa) Aug. 10, 1933, No. 22400. [Class 87 (ii)] To cut and deliver extruded materials in uniform lengths, notwithstanding variation in the rate of extrusion, the extruded bar is cut simultaneously at two spaced points by cutters moving in planes at right angles to the axis of extrusion and operating to remove the sheared length laterally out of the line of extrusion in addition to effecting the cut. Fig. 2 shows one construction in which adjustably spaced arms 2 rotating with the shaft 1 carry cutting blades 3, 4. A fixed member 8 situated at one side of the moving stream acts with the end of the nozzle 7 to form abutments for the material during the cutting stroke. The main body of the knife pushes the cut article off the table 5 on to a carrier belt or into a receptacle. Fig. 3 shows a pair of knives 3 at one end of an arm 2 which is connected to a fixed point by a pivoted link 12 and is oscillated by a crank 9 so that the knife blades move in an elliptical path. Fig. 4 shows a pair of knives 9 carried by a bent lever 7 which is operated by two oppositelyrotating geared cranks, and has a driving- connection without any play with the one crank 6 and a pin-and-slot connection 5 with the other. The blades in this case move in the path illustrated in dotted lines.
