423,764. Testing physical qualities of materials. SKODA WORKS, PLZEN, 37, Jungmannova, Prague. Jan. 25, 1934, No. 2668. Convention date, Jan. 27, 1933. [Class 106 (ii)] Apparatus for the rapid determination of the resistance to wear of building materials comprises means for holding stationary the material 9 to be tested and a disc 1 of substantially unwearable material, for example, titanite or some other metal carbide, or the material known by the Registered Trade Mark " Widia," which disc is held pressed against the member 9 by a weighted lever 4 and at the same time is rotated at a constant velocity for a predetermined period of time. The width L of the depression formed in the member 9 is observed by a swinging microscope at three different positions 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, and the mean of these readings is used to calculate the actual depth of the depression, a depth gauge of known construction being connected to the lever 4 to check the measurement. A cooling liquid, such as an aqueous solution containing 0À5 per cent by weight of potassium bichromate, may be used on the disc.
