Abstract

207,876. Herbert, E. G. Sept. 7, 1922. Testing hardness of materials.-A method of measuring the relative hardness of materials comprises rolling a weighted test-member upon the surface of the material to be tested and measuring the time or amplitude of the swing. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a compound pendulum h, which is initially balanced in three planes by screws b', b<2>, b<3>, and swings about a hardened ball a the centre of curvatures of which is the centre of suspension of the pendulum. The tilt of the pendulum is indicated by an inclinometer f of the spirit level type. The centre of gravity of the instrument can be shifted by means of a movable mass b<4> screwed on a lixed shaft. Two independent hardness tests are made :- (a) Time test for measuring the indentation hardness (b) Scale test for measuring the resistance to working with a tool. The ratio of the results of (b) and (a) is said to measure the " flow hardness " of the material. In testing, the pendulum is placed upon the specimen c and oscillated; the amplitude of the first oscillation as shown by the spirit level is measured for the scale test and the time of oscillation is taken for the time test. The results, of the time test by the instrument are convertible into Brinell numbers and extend upwards into regions of hardness where the .Brinell test is not applicable. For specimens of nearly the same hardness the pendulum is rendered unstable by adjustment of the mass b<4> and the hardness compared by means of the time test.
