Abstract

497,306. Measuring efficiency of lubricants. VOGEL, H. E. R. Dec. 4, 1937, No. 33643. [Class 106 (ii)] A rotating disc of very great resistance, covered with the lubricant, has applied with a given pressure to its flat surface the fine end of a pin of low wear resistance, the wear of the pin being calculated for example by weighing. A vertical axle 3 carries a disc 4 of very great wear resistance, and rotates in a vessel 1 or thermostat containing oil 5 and into which dips a thermometer 2. An interchangeable needle or pin 6 is fixed to an arm 7 on which is a plate 8 carrying a weight 9 which presses the pin 6 down on to the plate. The change in weight of the pin before and after test is a measure of the wear of the pin. The variation in length taken in conjunction with area of section can also be used. Oils may be tested by taking as lubricating value the ratio of the wear of the pin in a standard oil, say castor oil, to the wear when in the oil to be tested. Instead of one pin, several may be used, the disc may also rest on the pins and serve as a weight. If only a small portion of lubricant is available it may be placed in a groove bored in the disc.
