Abstract
482,462. Measuring efficiency of lubricants. MOORE, S. BRAMLEY-. Nov. 5, 1936, No. 30089. [Class 106 (ii)] Comprises a slidable member having its opposed faces parallel to one another, two parallel flat surfaces between which the slidable member is located, means to cause the said two surfaces to be pressed towards one another and means for measuring the effort required to move the slidable member between said surfaces when lubricated with the oil to be tested. In the bottom of the dished base a to contain oil is provided a raised surface a<1> on which rests a disc or plate c guided by a tongue c<1> engaging a groove a<2> in the base plate. In an opening in the cover b is disposed a motor d the spindle of which carries a disc d<2> and means (not shown) are provided to lower the motor so that it and the disc d<2> rest on the disc c. A projection c<2> from the plate c is constituted as a hollow plunger provided with a non-return valve c<5> which fits into a cylinder e having a closed end with a transverse bore through which passes a rotatable plug f carried by the cover b. A recess in the plunger receives the end of an arm g carried by the shaft h a second arm g<2> extending horizontally and being acted upon by an adjustable spring i or by a weight. The cylinder is provided in the top with a restricted orifice e<2> and with a large orifice e<3> in the end wall. The plug may be turned so that a passage f registers with or closes the orifice e<2>. A thermometer j is provided as shown. The surface a<1> instead of being fixed may be made rotatable and suitable means for driving provided. To measure viscosity, a predetermined quantity of oil is placed in the casing and the plunger withdrawn from the cylinder so that the latter is filled, the outlet e<3> being closed. The loading on arm g<2> to expel the oil through orifice e<2> is a measure of the viscosity. If the orifice e<3> is wide open, the effort required to move the slidable member will indicate the " static friction value " of the oil. If the disc d<2> be permitted to rest on the member c and is rotated, the effort required to move the member c will indicate the " dynamic friction value " of the oil. The plunger and cylinder may be dispensed with and the effect measured when disc d<2> has been raised clear of c.
