Abstract
711,851. Viscosimeters. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 1, 1951 [March 22, 1950], No. 4990/51. Class 106 (2) An apparatus for determining the viscosity of fluids comprises a power driven screw threaded member 4 rotatable in a vertical open ended sleeve 1 immersed in the fluid 8 under test, the screw threads on the member 4 being such that the fluid 8 is drawn both from the top and bottom of the sleeve 1 to a central part 6 in the sleeve 1. A pressure gauge 11 connected to the central part of the sleeve 1 is calibrated to give a reading proportional to the viscosity of the fluid. A relief valve 11b may be opened sufficiently to permit a small amount of fluid flow to insure a frequent interchange of the fluid between the members 1 and 4. The pressure gauge 11 may be calibrated in a manner allowing for the flow through the valve 11b. A motor 13 and the member 4 are removable for cleaning, the sleeve 1 being removable from the fluid container for similar reasons. In a modification, Fig. 4, a transparent vertical tube 29 is rotatable about a co-axial stationary screw threaded member immersed in the liquid 34 under test. On rotating the transparent tube 29, the resulting rise of the fluid in the tube 29 is a measure of the viscosity of the fluid. The whole may be readily taken apart to facilitate cleaning.
