[Class 120 (ii)] In a yarn-winding machine the relation between the speed of the tube &c. on which the yarn is being wound and the speed of the means traversing the yarn is varied so as to prevent the formation of pattern or ribbon winds by providing grooved pulleys on the two shafts or parts required to transmit one to the other motion varying in speed and a variable pulley for transmitting motion to and from it and comprising two oppositely-directed conical or like cheeks and a plate with oppositelydirected conical or like faces laterally movable between the cheeks ; the cheeks and plate provide V- grooves for the reception of belts for receiving motion from one of the grooved pulleys and transmitting it to the other, the belts being pulled into or moved outwards in their grooves by movement of the variable pulley which is mounted in a lever &c. oscillated so that the pulley is moved alternately nearer to and away from the parts carrying the grooved pulleys. As shown, the driving shaft c of the machine carries a double V-grooved pulley e connected by belts with a similar pulley on a shaft g geared to a shaft j, the shafts g and j carrying the winding or driving rolls for rotating the tubes &c. on which the yarn is to be wound, while the shaft k from which the traverse guides are driven carries a V-grooved pulley u connected by a belt v with the variable pulley l which is also connected by a belt t with a V-grooved pulley s on the driving shaft c and is journalled in a lever m pivoted at one end on a stud n and moved at the other end w by gearing and connections from a shaft 6 driven from the shaft k; the shaft 6 and a similar shaft 12 at the opposite side of the machine are geared to toothed wheels which actuate the means for removing the tubes and the yarn wound thereon from the driving rolls when the yarn breaks or terminates. The shaft 6 drives a worm wheel 4 on a shaft 2 carrying a cam 1 engaging bowls on a plate y secured to a screwed rod x adjustably secured in the end w of the lever m so that the average speed of the shaft k may be adjusted relatively to the speed of the shafts g, and so the relation of the frequency of the traverse to the speed of the driving rolls. The pulley l comprises oppositely-directed conical cheeks o, p and a plate q movable laterally between them and formed with oppositely-directed conical faces which with the cheeks o, p form the variable V-grooves for the belts t, v ; the plate q is moved by the belts on a rod r fixed in the cheeks o, p as the lever m is oscillated by the cam 1 and while the belt t is pulled more deeply into its groove in the variable pulley the belt v is moved outwardly in its groove and vice versa, the speed of the shaft k &c. consequently varying in relation to the speed of the shaft c, while the speed of the driving rolls remains constant. The belts t, v may be duplicated by providing the variable pulley with two movable plates q, each disposed between a cheek of the pulley and a conically-faced plate fixed to the cheeks, the pulleys s, u being also provided with double V-grooves.
