[Class 120 (ii).] A machine for winding yarn &c. in conical chases comprises a winding spindle, a traverse rod, a traverse cam for effecting relative reciprocation between the winding spindle and the traverse rod, means for coupling the traverse cam to be driven from the winding spindle, a hollow rail having an opening in each of its side walls, a bracket detachably mounted on the side walls and outside the rail to carry the winding spindle, traverse rod, traverse cam and drive therefor, and spaced axially aligned bearings for the winding spindle, the bearings being carried by the bracket in the openings in the side walls and permitting the bracket to be detached laterally from the hollow rail. The cam, its drive, the traverse rod and the winding spindle form a unit in a gang machine comprising a box-like housing or hollow rail 3, the side walls 4 of which are apertured to receive a number of units. A plate or bracket 10 bolted to the inner side wall has a laterally extending cover 14 terminating in a boss 15 and the plate and boss provide bearings for a shaft 20 carrying an enlarged extension 24, to which the spindle 25 is secured, and a driving pulley 22. When the bracket 10 has been unbolted from the side wall, it, together with the complete unit, may be removed laterally from the rail. A single belt 48 drives all the pulleys 22 as described in Specification 362,985. Reduction gearing 30, 31, 35, 36 connects the shaft 20 to a cylindrical cam 40 formed with a cam track 47 the points of reversal of direction of which are staggered with respect to each other. In the developed cam, Fig. 3, the limits at one side of the cam are aligned on the line a and on the other side, the staggering of the limits e-g is shown respectively by the spaced lines b-d, but the limits on both sides may be staggered and the length of the traverse be kept constant; in either case, the cam produces a staggering of the knuckles or bends of the convolutions of the yarn at the nose of the cop &c. being wound. The cam engages a crosshead 60 which is guided by a rod 63 secured to the plate 10 and is secured to a traverse rod 51 passing through a sleeve 54 secured to the plate 10. A pin and slot connection secures the rod 51 to a pivoted screwed rod 52 carrying a thread guide 50 and operating as described in Specification 24611/08, [Class 120, Spinning]. The remote end of the rod 52 is detachably carried by a bracket 70 permanently carried by the frame 3.
