Convention date, Nov. 3, 1933. [Class 4] A spoiler passage in each wing of an aeroplane is arranged with the opening in the upper surface of the wing in advance of that in the lower surface, closure members being provided which normally prevent the flow of air through the spoiler passages but either of which is operable at will to permit a flow of air from the bottom to the top of the wing for the purpose of effecting lateral control. The spoiler passage 1, 2, Fig. 1, has the upper end inclined forwardly of the wing and is adapted to be closed by pivoted valves 4, 5, connected by an endless chain 7 or by a pivoted valve 10, Fig. 4 with or without a balance flap 12. The valve may be in the form of a butterfly valve in the centre of the passage or may consist of a sliding plate. The valve 10, Fig. 8, is controlled by a spring 22 and is connected by a link 21 to a pivoted lever 15 provided with a pin 20 engaging in a slot 18 in a plate connected to the aileron 15. For small movements of the aileron 15 the valve 10 is maintained closed and opens only when the aileron has moved upwardly to permit the pin 20 to engage the end of the slot 18. The spoiler passages 24, Fig. 10, may be combined with ailerons 23 which are of small dimensions pivoted about an axis 25 inclined to the direction of flight.
