Abstract

423,322. Binders for periodicals ; cord cleats. HULL, W., 31, Victoria Street, Blackburn. Nov. 29, 1933, Nos. 33488 /33 and 1146 /34. [Class 146 (i)] [See also Group XXV] In a binder for periodicals and the like of the type having a stiff middle or back portion 1 lying between the two covers 4 and hingedly mounted thereon, this back portion being detached or spaced from the cloth or other backing 5, a number of flexible cords or wires 6 are mounted in the back portion 1, passing over the ends thereof and being secured by means located between the rear side of the back 1 and the cloth or other backing 5. The back 1 may be of wood, and is bevelled at 2 at the ends and at the rear, and provided with lateral spacing strips 3 at the ends and at the front. Devices for spacing the cords 6 evenly from one another, such as a comb-like device, a plate having spaced holes, or a wire bent in itself a number of times to furnish a row of eyelets, may be attached to the ends of the stiff back 1. The six cords 6 shown are formed from three separate loops passed around the back 1 and each hooked or secured in any way to a small spiral spring 7 situated at the rear of the back 1. Loops of cord 8 may be passed through the ends of the loops 6 to limit the extension of the springs 7. The ends of the loops may be secured to fixed anchorages on the rear of the back 1. In a modification, the ends of the loops are provided with metal or other rings and through these rings are threaded separate lengths 23, Fig. 10, of cord each furnished with a clip or cleat device 24 by means of which the loops are retained in position. Each cleat comprises a V-shaped strip of brass provided with holes 25, 27, and a V-shaped notch 26 wherein, by its own stiffness, the cord 23 engages to prevent slackening of the loops. Instead of loops of cord, single cords may be used. In a further arrangement the ends of the cords may be attached to two plates arranged to be drawn together by means of a strap and buckle. In another arrangement the necessary number of cords may be formed by winding a length of cord a number of times lengthwise around the stiff back portion, and one or both ends of the length may be connected to spiral springs which in turn are connected by short lengths of cord to fixed anchorages in the rear of the stiff back. Auxiliary wire or cord loops may be provided to limit the extension of the springs. The stiff back portion may be recessed at the ends, or it may be shorter in length than the covers, in order that the cords or wires may not protrude beyond the ends of the binder. In some of the above arrangements it is necessary to obtain access to the rear of the stiff back portion, and in these cases (1) the stiff back may be hingedly fixed at one edge to one of the cover boards and provided at the other edge with a hinged wing adapted to be engaged in a pocket provided on the inside of the other cover board, (2) the stiff back may be provided with a wing at each side edge for engagement in pockets in each cover board, and (3) the stiff back may be permanently hinged to both cover boards and the outer covering material of one cover board extended to form a flap or covering for the stiff back and to fit into a pocket formed on the outside of the other cover board.
