Abstract

423,164. Rolling wire. LLOYD, H. D., The Old Vicarage, Stretton, near Warrington, Lancashire. April 27, 1933, No. 12318. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [See also Group II] Coiled medium or high carbon steel rods having a sorbitic structure are produced by leading the rod from the rolls without substantial loss of heat into a quenching bath containing suitable molten salts or other non-aqueous liquid medium maintained at a temperature of 450-500‹ C., and coiling the rod therein. The heated rod m is fed from the finishing rolls n into a tube e which is curved at its end and leads into a central tube in a rotating frame e. Connected with this tube is a curved tube p also carried by the frame e which feeds the rod to and curls it round a stationary drum q immersed in a bath a containing molten salts or other medium and mounted in masonry b and heated by a burner c. The drum q is perforated at 6 so that an impeller 4 mounted on the shaft carrying the frame e circulates the quenching medium in and around the coiled rod. When the whole of the rod has been coiled on the drum q, a base plate t hinged to the tank a at u is lowered by an arm v operated by an hydraulic cylinder w and the coil released from the drum q slides down the plate t on to bars 3 and so on to a table 2 which is then raised out of the bath by suitable means.
