422,887. Batteries. CHLORIDE ELECTRICAL STORAGE CO., Ltd., and HEAP, B., Clifton Junction, near Manchester. July 11, 1934, No. 20322. [Class 53] Active material for the plates of an accumulator consists of a mixture of 30 per cent finely divided lead and 70 per cent of the red tetragonal variety of litharge having a specific gravity of 9À3. The finely divided lead may be prepared by the action of reducing gases on lead oxide or by the disintegration or attrition of lead by mechanical means. The red tetragonal variety of litharge may be made by oxidizing lead at a temperature under 300‹ C. The mixture may also be prepared by partly reducing red tetragonal litharge and mixing the resulting product with partially oxidized finely divided lead to produce the required proportions of lead and litharge. The mixture is made into a paste with sulphuric acid and the finished plates are dried at 100‹ C. According to the Provisional Specification, small quantities of red lead or other substances may be added to the paste to increase its conductivity.
