Abstract

Phthaloylfluoranthenes are converted into their leuco acid sulphuric esters or the stable salts thereof according to known methods. The starting materials are obtained by reacting fluoranthene or its substitution products with phthalic anhydride or a substitution product and ring-closing the products after further substitution if desired (cf. Specification 378,476). In examples: (1) dry leuco phthaloylfluoranthene is heated with a mixture of pyridine and chlorsulphonic acid in a current of carbonic acid; the ester on treatment with a mineral acid and a weak oxidizing agent gives a greenish-yellow precipitate; (2) similar treatment of bromophthaloylfluoranthene (obtained by bromination) gives the corresponding ester and bromo derivative obtained by brominating 12-fluoranthenoyl - o - benzoic acid, separating isomers via their sodium salts, and ring-closing by means of sulphuric acid may be similarly converted; (3) phthaloylfluoranthene is heated with copper, pyridine and chlorsulphonic acid in a current of carbonic acid to give the leuco sulphuric ester. These esters yield strong shades of yellow when dyed or printed on textile fibres and developed.
