Abstract

422,548. Reciprocating-saw machines. CHRISTENSEN, J., Mount Street, Heidelberg, Victoria, Australia. April 10, 1933, No. 10732. Void [Abridged as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Oct. 16, 1932]. [Class 145 (ii)] [See also Groups XVII, VII, and XXII] In a machine for bending flat metal strips, provided with teeth along one edge, into channel form and fixing the strips along the opposite edges of three (or four) boards which are subsequently folded up to form the sides and bottom. (and lid) of a box, the boards may, as shown, be cut from lengths 70, Fig. 1, stacked on a table between walls 75, 76, the wall 76 having a slot at its lower part through which the bottom boards are fed by pusher bars on chains 77 intermittently actuated by ratchet and pawl mechanism from the driving shaft 84; the stacks of boards may be spaced apart or, as shown, may abut with the exception of the stacks 70b, 70c which are spaced at the top by a partition 72, Fig. 9, and at the bottom by fingers 73 on spring-controlled rock-shafts 73a, the fingers being temporarily depressed by a push bar as the boards are being fed forwards. The board lengths 70 are fed over the strips to abut against a stop surface and are pressed on to the strips at the end of the strip-feeding operation by a press plate 58, Fig. 7, reciprocated vertically from the shaft 84, the boards to form the box members being cut from the lengths 70, just prior to the engagement thereof by the press plate, by a saw 83 slidably mounted in a carrier 87 reciprocated vertically from the shaft 84; the saw is also reciprocated horizontally in the carrier by a rotating eccentric pin 89 engaging a yoke 88 in the saw support and the boards are held during the sawing operation by stops which are moved up through holes in the bed 66 by links actuated from rock-shafts driven from a cam on the shaft 84. The press plate 58 carries an adjustable projection 65a which controls a clutch 54 for the strip-feeding rollers so that the desired lengths of strip are fed at successive movements of the rollers and projections 58a on the plate force the boards down on to the strips and clear of the oncoming boards while cutters 112 carried by the plate co-operate with cutters disposed below an opening in the bed to sever the strips in front of the assembled boards which are taken out of the machine by rollers 108, which also turn down the teeth of the strips projecting through the boards. The press or means connected therewith may be arranged to print, burn or mark the boards.
