Figure 10 is a detail of the clutch pedal releasing devices.
Figure 11 is a plan view of the machine shown in Figure 8 partly in section.
Figure 12 is a fragmentary elevation partly'in section showing one form of element compacting device.
The main frame of the machine embodying the form of my invention which I have illustrated in Figures 1 to 7, comprises a base plate 10, to which are suitably attached pairs of uprights 11 secured at their upper ends to a top plate 12. The means for feedmg the radiator element forming strip from a source of supply (i. e. the forming machine), to the cutting and stacking devices will first be described.
A supporting frame work attached to the strip forming machine at. 9 is. indicated generally by 13. Suitably journaled in the frame 13 is a drive shaft 14 adapted to be driven from a source of power, preferably with a spur gear 19 fixed to a short shaft 20 carrying an upper feed roller 21'. The
the feed rollers 16 and 21, springs 24 sur-.
shaft 20 is journaled in arms 22 carried by a rod 23 and slidable on the uprights 25. To provide an adjustable pressure between round the uprights 25, which are secured to the frame 13 and pass thru enlargements in the arms 22 and are compressed between said arms and adjusting nuts 26 at the upper ends of the uprights 25 to put the roper pressure on the roller 21. A roller re easmg cam 27 rigid with a handle 28 is carried by a sleeve 29 loosely mounted on the rod 23, so that by pressing the handle 28 downward the end of the cam 27 acting upon the table of the machine presses up the frame comprising rod 22 and arms 23, and raises the roller 21 from the roller 16.
The means for cutting the element formingstrip into sections or elements of uniform length will now be described. The frame 13 comprises a vertical plate 30, adjacent and parallel to the feed rollers 16, 21. A fixed knife-edge or shear 31 is secured to the upper part of the plate and is held in place by a cover plate 32 secured to the face of plate 30 and by screws 33 passing thru elongated slots 34 in the shear 31. Set screws 35 retain the shear 31 against vertical movement and permit vertical adjustment of the shear to take up wear thereon. A lower movable shear blade 36 is attached to a shear carrying block 37, which carrier block is guided for vertical movement by any desired means, such as the slot 8 in the block 30 and the undercut blocks 38 .and 39, suitably fixed to the plate 30. Af
link 371 may be attached to the shear carrylng block 37 and receive a vertical reciprocatlng movement therefrom for a purpose to be hereinafter described. Block 37 and shear 36 carried thereby may be actuated by the following devices.
A shaft 44 journaled in bearings 45 and 46' secured to the feed roll frame 13 carries a worm gear 47, which meshes with the worm 48 on the drive shaft 14. Shaft 44 also carries a disc 49 provided with a cam or PIOJGOtlOIl 50, adapted to engage and dc press a finger 51 of the cutter actuating device. Finger 51 is adjnstably mounted in a guide way 52 on an elbow lever 53 pivoted at 54, to the frame plate 30. The end of the elbow lever 53 opposite the finger 51 carries 12, and carries at its upper end a shaft 14 has passed an element of a prede- I termined length thru feed rollers 16, 21 the cam engages finger 51 and actuates the shear. 36 to out said element from the strip, and that the operation of cutting elements of uniform length will continue until the strip is exhausted or the forming machine is t pp 1 It is particularly important that all the elements are cut to the same length and that they be accurately aligned by the cutting means or by the stops 105 so that the projecting tubes on each element will drop with the openings in the top of the preceding element to form the nested structure described in my copending application. v
During the feeding of the element strips out through the cutting means the strip is kept in motion and is suspended from the feed rollers 16 and 21 so that the projections on the strip being fed to the stacking ma chine do not drop into the openings in the previously stacked strip until it is severed from the remainder of the strip by the cutters 31 and. 32.
The means for receiving and stacking the elements fed thru the feed rollers 16 and 21 and cut off by shears 31, 36 will now be described. A receiving table 59 extends between the pairs of uprights 11, and is provided about midway of itslength and on opposite sides with bosses 60, threaded to receive vertical screws 61 and 62 supported and held from longitudinal movement by-the top plate 12. A guide member 591 provided with suitable grooves 593 for receiving the tubular projections 594 of the radiator elements and provided with an adjustable stop finger 592 may be placed on the receiving table 59 to receive the first elementsif desired. 7
The screw 61 passes thru a hub 63 on'the top plate 12, and terminates in a square shank 64 adapted. to receive a wrench or handle for manual turning of the screw.
For driving the screws 61 and 62 and moving the receivingtable 59 a pinion 65 is fixed to the screw 61 above the hub 63 and meshes with an idler pinion 66 carried by a stud 67 on the top plate 12. The screw 62 passes thru a housing 68 attached to the top plate pinion 69 which meshes with the idler 66 carried on the top plate 12 and with a gear 70, through which the driving power is preferably imparted to the screws 61 and 62. A short shaft 71 supported in a bracket 710 attached 4 to the housing 68 carries adisc provided with a pawl 72 which engages internal teeth 7 3 in a recess in gear 70 which is free upon the shaft'71 to thereby provide a one way connection between shaft 71 and gear 70. Fixed to the lowerend of short shaft 71 is abevel or miter gear 74 which meshes with a bevel gear 75 carried by a spindle 76 which is connected thru a universal and extension joint77 with the shaft 44 driven from shaft 14 so that the cut-ting mechanism and stacking table are operated in synchrony. Any suitable me aps may be provided for supporting the-gear 75 in mesh with the gear- 74. The elements of the gear train which drives the screws 61 and 62 will be so proportioned that theigQtable Will be lowered a distance equal totlie height of one element while the length ofj'one element is passing thru the feed rollers.
Means are provided for stopping the machine when a predetermined number of elements have been stacked (i. e. enough to form a. complete cooling section) on the table, and the table proportionately lowered. If the stackingmachine is used in conjunction with the radiator element strip forming machine described in my application Senal No. 641,850 above mentioned it is desirable that both the strip forming machine and the stacking machine be stopped. I
A pedal which may actuate the clutch controlling any desired machine such, as the strip or element forming machine 9, is shown at 81'. To hold said clutch pedal depressed a finger 82 carried by a shaft 83 projects over the edge of the pedal. Shaft 83 is partly supported by the bracket 84 suitably attached to the frame of the stacking machine, is urged towards the clutch pedal by spring 881, and adjacent said bracket carries an arm 85 provided with a tongue 86 adapted to be engaged by the latch 87 pivoted to the bracket 84. Latch 87 is provided with a roller 88 adapted to be engaged by the trigger 89 depending from the carriage 59.
After the machine has been stopped in the manner heretofore described, and while the stack of elements is still on the receiving table, said stack of elements may be pressed together to form a radiator cooling section by elevating the receiving table 59, and com ressing the elements between said table an the top plate 12 of the stacking frame. I This pressing may be manually performed by applying a suitable handle or wrench to the square end 64 of screw- 61, and
turning the same to move the table 59 to-- Ward the top 12, the pawl 72 being moved out of engagement with teeth 73 of gear I 70 to prevent turning of the gears 74 and 75, etc. After the pressing operation the radiator is removed. the receiving table is elevated to its initial position a guide plate 591 placed thereon; and the machine again set. in operation to form, sever and stack the element to form another radiator by depreshereinbefore described adapted also to be combined with the strip forming machine described in my application Serial No. 641,850. The main frame of the stacking device in this embodiment comprises a base plate 100 uprights 101, and top plate 102. The elements delivered by the feeding and cutting mechanism may be received by a guide plate 103, placed on a table 104, and stopped by a finger 105, adjustably attached to an upright 101. to accommodate elements of various lengths. The means for lowering the table 104 as the height of the stack increases is constructed as follows:
Suitably attached to the table 104 is an apron 105' in which is journaled a shaft 106 having an extended squared end 107. Rigidly mounted on the shaft 106 is a pinion 108 which meshes with a rack 109 fixed to one of the uprights 101. Loosely mounted on shaft 106 is a pinion 1.10, to which is attached an arm 111 having fixed thereto astud 1-12 carrying a pawl 113 adapted to engage a ratchet 114 fixed to the shaft 106. An adjustable friction brake band 115, sultably attached to the apron 105' surrounds a drum 117 on the shaft 106 to prevent movement of the table 104 under the influence of gravity. Rollers 118 in the apron 105 bear against the upright 101 and together with pinion 108 retain table 104 against longitudinal tilting. f
-The pinion 110 meshes with a rack 119 which is guided for vertical reciprocatory movement by a flanged roller 120 carried on a stud .121 fixed to the table 104, and a recessed guide block 122, integral with a bracket 123' fixed to the base plate 100. Pivoted to the bracket 123 is a lever 124 which is bifurcated and slotted at one end to receive a stud 125 extending thru therack rod 119. The opposite end of the lever 124 carries a short link 126 secured by a turn buckle or other suitable device 127 to the link 371, which it'will be recalled, ls'attached to the reciprocating shear block 37. The table 109 is thus lowered at each operation of the shears thru a distance equal to the height of one radiator element; the lever 124, pinions 108 and 110, and ratchet 113 being so proportioned as to effect the. correct amount of movement.
Means are provided for partlally pressing each element delivered to the table into place in the next preceding element. For this purpose the shaft 44 carries cam 128 which actuated the arm 130 rigidly mounted on a shaft 131 'journaled in brackets 132 secured to the main frame. The shaft 131 is thereby rocked in a counter clockwise direction as viewed in Figure 12 against the tension of spring 133. Shaft 131 carries the arms 134 provided with presser fingers 135 adapted when the shaft 132 is rocked to press the last element delivered to the stack into engaging relation with the next lower element. It'is to be understood of course that the position ofthe cams 50 and 128 on the disc 49 is such that sufiicient time will elapse after actuation of the cutter for the severed element to drop into place upon the stack before the presser fingers 135 are actuated and that the presser fingers are moved out of the path of the incoming ele-, ment strip by the springs 133 as soon as the roller 129 on the end of arm 130 passes: the top of the cam 128.
Means are provided for stopping the machine when apredetermined number" of elements have been placed on the receiving table comprising a cam '136, adjustably mounted on apron 105, and adapted to pass thru a guide 137 on an upright 101 and rock the latch 87 which acts to release a clutch edal or similar device in the manner hereto ore described.
When suflicient elements have been stacked to form the desired height of cooling section the machine is stopped as just described, and the stack removed to a suitable press for final nesting or pressing of the elements together.
To elevate the table 104 to position to receive a new stack of elements the pawl 113 is moved out of engagement with the ratchet 114 and a wrench applied to the end 107 of the shaft 106 which is turned in a clockwise direction to run the pinion 108 and table up the rack 109 on the upright 101.
A suitable guide 36 .guides the elements from the shear onto the stack.
The invention is not to be considered as limited to the exact, structure herein described and illustrated in the drawings but is to be construed as extending to all equivalent devices falling within the "scope of the appended claims.
