This invention is a cutting attachment for making one or more cuts, slits or scorings in the side walls or the end walls of a paper box. The attachment is part of a box wrapping machine, of the type where a paper cover is coated with adhesive and pressed into place on the bottom and around the side and end walls of the box. The invention is particularly for use on a box wrapping machine, but could be used to cut the side and end walls of paper boxes, whether wrapped or unwrapped.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a cutting attachment which is operated in timed relation with the box wrapping operation, which attachment cuts one or more slits in, or scores, the side walls or end walls of the box, immediately following the application of the paper wrapper.
The invention comprises essentially one or more cutters which are moved laterally into and out of cutting relation with the walls of the box whether wrapped or not wrapped.
The box is on a form which moves up and down in a vertical path, as is usual in machines of this type. The cutting means of this invention is moved horizontally into and out of cutting engagement with the box as it is moved past the cutting means on its up or down stroke.
In one aspect of the invention, the box on the form is moved to its lowermost position; then the cutter is moved into cutting engagement with one or more walls of the box, then the box is moved upwardly as the form is moving upwardly, so that the cutting operation takes place on the upward stroke of the form.
In another aspect of the invention, the cutter is moved into cutting engagement with the box as it moves downwardly with the form, so that the walls of the box are cut on the downward stroke of the form.
The back and forth or lateral movement of the cutting means is controlled by a cam operating in timed relation with the wrapping machine proper, the cam moving the cutter in one direction, then releasing the cutter so that a spring moves it in'the opposite direction.
The operating shaft which carries and operates the cam and which, as mentioned, operates in timed relation with the box machine, mayalso carry the usual spring pressed roller for pressing the walls of the box being out against the form. This spring pressed roller moves into and out of engagement with the box walls in the same timed relation as the cutter, both the roller and cutter being controlled by the same oscillatable shaft.
In one aspect of the invention, the spring pressed roller may be positioned above the cutting means and in another aspect of the invention the spring pressed-roller may be positioned below the cutting means.

Referring now to these drawings, the invention comprises a supporting plate 2, a side 4, slidable to move laterally on the plate 2, plate 4 having a key 5 slidable in a groove in plate 2. Plate 4 is pulled to the left by tension spring 6 connected to studs 8 on plate 2 and slide 4. Plate 4 is slidably mounted on plate 2, as by guide bolts 1 passing through slots la in plate 4. The slide 4 at its outer end It! carries a supporting bar l2 on which bar 12 are the channeled members [4 Cutter bars [8 carry one or more cutters 24., The slide member 4 is provided with a fixed cam 26 having an operative face 28.
A transversely extending shaft 3G; which is part of the box machine and is operated in timed relation with the wrapping machine proper, is provided with an operating cam 32, having a cam face 34 adapted to engage with the cam face 28 of cam 26.
The usual form for supporting the wrapped box is shown at 48 and may have the usual cutting plate 42. The paper box is shown'at 44 covered by the wrapper 46.
The operation is as follows:
Starting with the position of Fig. 3, the form 40 moves downwardly to the lowermost pointof its stroke, until its top is below the level of the cutters 24, which at this stage are retracted. Then operating shaft 39 moves counter-clockwise, to the position of Fig. 2, to move slide 4,

enough to cut the walls of the box as the form moves upwardly. The form is then moved upwardly past the cutters as shown in Fig. 2, this;
3 up stroke serving to cut one or more slits or scores in the walls of the box. The form continues upwardly to about the position of Fig. 3, the cut box is removed, a fresh one is put on and the operation is repeated.
Start referring now to Figs. 4 and 5, an arrangement is shown where the walls of the box are cut on the down stroke of the form, instead of on the up stroke. In this modification, a spring 50 secured to studs 52 on the plates 2 and G urges members 4 and I4 and the cutter bars E8 to the right, that is, to the cutting position. The slide member 4 is provided with a cam 54. The shaft 56, which is operated in timed relation with the wrapping machine proper, is provided with a cam 58 adapted to engage cam 54. In this aspect of the invention, spring 50 moves the cutters carried by the cutter bars l8 into the cutting position and holds them there on the down stroke of the form 40 so that the box walls are cut on such down'stroke. As the form rises, cam 58 en gages cam 54 to move the cutters slightly to the leftto clear the box on the up stroke. The cut box is now removed, a fresh box is put in place and the'ope'ration repeated.
As shown in Fig. 2, the oscillatable operating shaft 30'may be provided with the usual support Gll'for slidably supported rods 62 carrying bearing members 64 for end pins 66 of a roller 68. Compression springs 69 positioned between 68 and 10 provide a resilient mounting for this roller 68. When oscillatable shaft 31! makes a quarter -turn counterclockwise, roller 68 is raised out of engagement with the box and the cutter l8moves to cutting position.
The'cuttingor scoring attachment of this inventionmay be used for-cutting one or more slits 12 in the side walls of a box, as in Fig. '7, or for cutting one or more slits M in the end walls, as in Fig. "8.
While the invention has been illustrated in some detail, it should be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the precise details shown, but may be carried out in other ways.
I claim as my invention:
1. A'cu'tting attachment for a paper box machine, comprising in combination with a verti cally -re'c iprocable form for moving the box up and down in a vertical path, a slidably mounted cutter for slitting a wall of the paper box, and means, including a cam and a spring, for movingsa'id cutter into and out of cutting engagement with the box, said cutter acting when in engagement with the box to cut the wall of the box as the box is moved by said form past said cutter.
2. A cutting attachment for a paper box machine, comprising in combination with a vertically reciprocable form for moving the box up and down in a vertical path, a slidably mounted cutter for slitting a wall of the paper box, and means, including a cam for moving the cutter into cutting engagement with the box, said cutter acting when in engagement with the 'box to cut the wall of the box as the box is moved by s'aidform past said cutter and a spring for moving the cutter in the opposite direction, away from thebox.
3. A'cutting attachment for a paper box machineycomprising in combination with a vertically reciprocable form for moving the box up and down in a vertical path, an oscillatable opcrating shaft operating in timed relation with said vertically reciprocating form, slidably mounted cutting means for slitting one wall of the box, said cutting means being movable in one direction into engagement with the box for cutting the box as the box is moved by said form past said cutting means, and being movable in the opposite direction, away fromthe path of said form, and cam and spring means for effecting the described movements of said cutting means.
4. A cutting attachment for a wrapping machine for paper boxes, comprising in combination with a vertically reciprocable form for moving the wrapped box up and down in a vertical path, an oscillatable operating shaft operating in timed relation with said vertically reciprocating form, slidably mounted cutting means for slitting one wall of the box, cam means, operated by said oscillatable operating-shaft, for moving said cutting means into cutting engagement with one Wall of the box, said cutting means acting to cut the box as the box is moved past said cutting means by said form, and spring means for moving said cutting means away from the wall of the box. v
5. A cutting attachment for a wrapping machine for paper boxes, comprising in combina tion with a vertically reciprocable form for moving the wrapped box up and down in a vertical path, an oscillatable operating shaft operating in timed relation with said vertically reciprocating form, a spring pressed roller carried by said oscillatable shaft, and movable therewith, and adapted to press against one wall of the box, slidably mounted cutting means for slitting one wall of the" box, said cutting means being movable in one direction into engagement with the box for slitting the box as the box is moved by said form past said cutting means, and being movable in the opposite direction, away from the path of said form, and cam and spring means cooperating with said cutting means for effecting the described movements thereof.
6. A cutting attachment for a wrapping machine for paper boxes, comprising in combination with a vertically reciprocable form for moving the wrapped box up and down in a vertical path, an oscillatable operating shaft operating in timed relation with said vertically reciprocating form, slidably mounted cutting means for slitting one wall of the box, a spring pressed roller carried by said oscillatable shaft and positioned above said cutting means, and pressing against one'wall of the-box, as the box is moved past said pressing means, cam means, operated by said oscillatable operating shaft, for moving said cutting means into cutting engagement with one wall of the box, for cutting the box as the box is moved on its form past said cutting means, and spring means for moving said cutting means away from the wallet the box.
'7. A cutting attachment for a wrapping machine for paper boxes, comprising in combination with a verticallyreciprocable form for moving the wrapped box up and down in a vertical path, a slidably mounted cutter for slitting a wall of the paper box, and means, including a spring for moving the cutter into cutting engagement with the box, and acting to slit the wall of the box as the box is moved by said form past said cutter, and a cam for moving the matter in the opposite direction, away from the box.

A cutting attachment for a Wrapping machine for paper boxes, comprising in combination with a vertically reciprocable form for moving the wrapped bo'x up an'd down ina vertical path, an oscillatable operating shaft operating in timed relation with said vertically reciprocating form, slidably mounted cutting means for slitting one wall of the box, cam means, operated by said oscillatable operating shaft, for moving said cutting means away from the box, and spring means for moving said cutting means into cutting engagement with one wall of the box, said cutting means acting to cut the wall of the box as the box is moved by said form past said cutting means.

A cutting attachment for a wrapping machine for paper boxes, comprising in combination with a vertically reciprocable form for moving the wrapped box up and down in a vertical path, an oscillatable operating shaft operating in timed relation with said vertically reciprocating form, slidably mounted cutting means for slitting one wall of the box, a spring pressed roller carried by said oscillatable shaft and positioned below said cutting means, and pressing against one Wall of the box as the box is moved past said HARRY KELLER.
