Abstract

421,192. Receivers; head-sets. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., GRACE, B. B., and ROBERTON, J. S. P., 63, Aldwych, London. June 17, 1933, No. 17326. [Class 40 (iv)] [See also Group XXXVI] A telephone receiver, more particularly for use with wireless headphones, comprises an L - shaped magnetic member 4, part or all of which is permanently magnetized, a complete or incomplete ring 6 of magnetic material having a tongue 17 welded to one limb of the magnet so that the ring is parallel to the second magnet limb and a polepiece 5 welded to the end of the second limb so as to be parallel to the first limb and positioned centrally with respect to the ring. The polepiece is formed of a nickel-iron alloy as described in Specification 295,668, [Class 40 (iv)], and has an axial hole 21 drilled therein for about one-third of its length from the tip. An insulating strip 7 is threaded on the polepiece which also receives the coil 10 which is wound on thin ebonite cylinders without spool cheeks, the ends of the coil being taken to terminal members on the strip 7. These may comprise coiled springs 8, Fig. 2, in which the ends of the conductor leads are gripped, or spring clips, Fig. 3, each formed from two looped pieces of wire 18, 19. A paper ring and the usual diaphragm are retained on the ring 6 by an earpiece screwing on to casing 1. As shown in Fig. 1, the receiver is supported from the headband by a spring clip 3 the straight legs 12 of which pass through holes in the flanges of a member 13 of shallow channel cross section. The headband comprises two wires 14 covered with artificial leather 16, the ends of the wires being passed through further holes in the upper flange of member 13 and held in place by a rivet or eyelet 15. Instead of the wires 14 and member 13, a single piece of strip metal can be shaped as a headband, the ends being made of shallow channel cross section with the flanges drilled to take the legs 12 of the clip 13.
