420,305. Variable-speed generator systems; automatic regulation. DYNAMIC DEVICES, Inc., 2973, Kingsley Road, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A. May 29, 1933, No. 15464. Convention date, Oct. 29, 1932. [Class 38 (iv)] An accessory device for application to a variable-speed generator to give voltage regulation comprises a vibratory relay having a winding in two sections, one section 12, Fig. 6 of which is linked with one of the generator poles, the other section of which links the magnetic circuit of the relay. This winding is connected in parallel with the armature and acts as a bucking winding. When the voltage exceeds a predetermined amount the relay operates and inserts a resistance 51 in the normal field circuit 8, 9. A construction is shown in Fig. 2 in which use is made of the opening 16 provided for inspection of the armature, &c. A metal tray 18 is mounted in this opening and clamped in position by a strap 21. The relay core 27 is mounted on the underside of the tray, the end pieces projecting through the tray to form polepieces 26, 27 for an armature 33 having contacts 40, 41. The resistance is mounted by the side of the armature and connected to the contacts 40, 41, Fig. 9, shows a modification in which the winding links the magnetic circuit 80 of a further relay 81 which operates as a cut-out switch. When the voltage exceeds a predetermined amount the contacts 84, 85 are closed to complete the load circuit. To give positive opening of the relay a reverse current winding 88 is provided. In a further modification the relays may be provided with separate windings which are in series with the winding. The armatures of the relays are provided with adjusting means to enable the point of response to be adjusted. Specification 420,304 is referred to.
