Abstract

257,675. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., and Parry, R. D. June 5, 1925. Regulation, automatic. - In automatic regulators of the vibratory type the vibratory contact is actuated through a connecting member damped by mechanical inertia or by eddy-current reaction, in order that quick movements of the regulating member may be effected and slow movements ineffective. The figure shows one form of apparatus according to the invention for regulating the voltage of an alternating current generator 11 by periodically putting resistance 17 into and out of the field circuit of an exciting machine 14. The main vibratory contact 21 is actuated jointly by a line potential solenoid 27 and an exciter voltage solenoid 32. The core of the exciter voltage solenoid is linked to a heavy disc 29 turning freely on the end of a lever 28, which thus communicates any movements too quick to overcome the inertia of the disc. To obtain the same result by eddy-current reaction the end of the lever 28 is formed as a copper sector lying between the poles of a magnet attached to the solenoid-core 31. In a modification the exciter solenoid acts through the damped connection directly upon the vibratory contact lever, and the line solenoid acts upon a lever which is restrained by a dash-pot and is jointed by a one-way hinge to the contact lever. In a further modification separate co-operating contact levers are employed, one for each solenoid. The invention is stated to be applicable for controlling the voltage, current, or power of a generator, or the speed of a motor. Specifications 28190/08, and 18497/14, [Class 38 (v), Electric switches &c.], are referred to.
