[Class 78 (iv)] The bucket-arms are formed of upper sections 6, 7 pivotally mounted on the grab head 1, and lower sections 6 comprising interchangeable working members for digging or gathering loose material, the sections 5 being mounted on the large lower faces of the upper sections and the auxiliary gear arranged below their pivots 2, 3. As shown, the arms are moved positively, both for opening and closing the grab, by pulley-tackle arranged so that the ropes lie horizontally with the blocks not far above the ground when the open grab is lowered. Four parallel frame bars 1 are connected by spindles 2, 3, which form pivots for the box-shaped arms 6,7, and the links 8, 9. The link 8 is connected at 21 with a link 11 pivoted on the arm 7 at 5, and the link 9 is connected at 3<1> with a link 10 pivoted on the arm 6 at 4, the two linkages such as 2, 2<1>, 5, 3 forming a link parallelogram. The links 8, 9 are connected by links 16, 17 to opposite cranks 18 on a spindle 21. Sheaveblocks 12, 13 for the closing rope are mounted within transverse straps on the pairs of links 10, 10 and 11, 11 respectively, near the hinge pin 4, 5, the two ends of the rope passing round guide sheaves 19 as shown at Z, Z. Sheaves 14, 15 for the opening rope are mounted similarly on the links 10, 11 near the hinge pins 2<1>, 31, and the two ends of the opening rope pass round guide sheaves 20 as shown at O, O, but the mountings for these sheaves are offset in order to pass over the blocks 12, 13. The arms 6, 7 are provided with studs 22 and bored lugs 23 for attachment of the jaws S or other digging and grabbing devices, for example forked members for gripping logs. or rakes or buckets with serrated edges.
