HOISTING-BUCKET.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. HroKnY, citizen of the United States, residing at Port Henry, in the county of Essex and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting- Buckets, of which the following is a spoolfication.
The present invention relates to improvements in hoisting buckets of the clam shell or grab type, designed especially for excavating and for loading coal, ore and other similar material.
In buckets of this type the two opposing jaws are opened by a pull on a pair of opening cables, and in the present instance the jaws are closed by positive action of a lazy tongs arrangement of levers connected with the jaws and actuated by the hoist cable or rope, and in some instances the jaws of the bucket may be opened by impact with the coal pile or pile of ore, as Wlll be hereinafter described.
The invention consists essentially in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings onecomplete example of the physical embodiment of the invention is illustrated, the parts being combined and arranged according to the best mode so far devised for the practical application of the principles of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side view of a bucket constructed according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view of the bucket.
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view showing the bolt connection for lever and links and the cotter pin for retaining parts in proper position.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention as illustrated in the drawings the bucket is composed of the two sections or jaws 1 and 2, and these jaws have each a pair of lever arms 3 and 4: that are riveted or bolted securely to the jaws, and crossed, and provided at their crossing points with a pair of alined pivot bolts 5, 5.
The short arms 6 and 7 of the respective 1evers 3 and 1, above the fulcrum points 5,5 are pivotally connected to links 8 and 9,the bolts 10 providing the pivotal or hinge joint, and
there are two links 8 and two links 9 to co-aot with the levers at the ends of the two bucket jaws. As seen in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the two sets of pivot points 10 are spaced apart, but at their upper ends the pairs of links 8-.9 are brought together and have a common pivot point 11 at the ends of a cross bar 12, which is the support or hanger for the bucket and to which the block 13 of the hoisting tackle is attached by the eye 14: and eye bolt 15, the latter passing through the cross bar and secured therein.
The hoisting rope 16 passes around the pulley of the block 13 and over a suitable drum (not shown) of a hoisting motor, for raising or lowering the bucket, and it will readily be seen that the tendency of the pull on the hoisting rope is to close the jaws. Thus the rope pulls on the hanger bar 12 and the load in the bucket, (or the weight of the bucket itself is sufiicient load) resists the pull so that the pull on the bar causes the two sets of links 8, 9 to draw their pivot points 10, 10 together which action swings the crossed levers on their fulcrums 5 to close the jaws of the bucket, as in Fig. 1.
.Each bucket has a release or opening cable 17 which are connected at a suitable point and may be manipulated in unison by the operator to open the jaws of the bucket. These cables pass under the upper guide pulleys 18 on the hanger bar 12, and down to and around the pulleys in the double block 19, which latter is coupled to the eye 20 of a strap secured at the outer end of each bucket jaw. Preferably there are two or more sheaves or pulleys in the block 19 and the cable or rope 17 forming 'the fall has its end secured to the hanger 12 and then passes around the sheaves in the block 19 and up under the guide pulley 18 and thence to the point where the duplicate opening ca bles are joined and in position to be manipulated with one movement by the operator.
With the bucket in position of Fig. 1, and loaded, when the release cables are pulled, the power is applied at the points 20 of the bucket jaws and the levers are caused to swing on their fulcrums 5, separating the horizontally spaced pivot or hinge points 10, and lifting the fulcrum point 5 up to- .for changes,
