[Class 87 (ii).] Boxes or other articles are made of pulp by perforated moulds of approximately the internal shape of the articles, the moulds being immersed in the pulp while a high partial vacuum is produced within the moulds, the articles formed on the moulds being removed after drying and stamped to final form. The perforated moulds 20, Fig. 1, may be clamped by bars 5 and locking members 7 over the open faces of a polygonal or circular drum 2, having longitudinal partitions 10 connected to a hollow shaft 9 which rotates intermittently or continuously about a fixed shaft 16. The shaft 16 has an internal cross partition midway along the drum so that the two ends of the shaft are isolated, one end communicating with means for producing a vacuum the other end being open to discharge. Funnels 12 on the shaft 9 communicate during certain periods with ports 17 in the vacuum end of the shaft 16 in order that pulp may be deposited on the moulds and air drawn through the deposited pulp to dry it partially. Thereafter, communication with the ports 17 is cut off and the water collected in the chambers 2 passes to discharge through the other end of the shaft 16. The moulds on their carriers are then placed in a frame 25, Fig. 3, the moulds at one end of the frame bearing against resilient buffers 34, while the moulds at the other end are struck by spring released, cam actuated hammers 27 thus loosening the articles on the moulds whereupon the moulded articles fall on to a delivery plate whose distance below the moulds may be adjusted.
