[Class 94 (i).] In a machine in which partly formed packets are conveyed by a transfer wheel 2 from a flat position on a bed 1 to a vertical position in a collator 3 along which they are fed intermittently by belts 6, the packets just before reaching the transfer wheel pass under a detecting finger 14 which, when a packet is absent or is without a wrapper, operates to interrupt the drive of the belts 6. The belts 6 pass around knurled rollers 7 which are driven intermittently through gearing 8 by ratchet and pawl mechanism, comprising a pawl 10 eccentrically mounted on a constantly rotating disc 12 and engaging at each revolution a ratchet wheel 13. The packets are removed from the transfer wheel 2 by an ejector 19 which is rocked about its pivot 22 by a rotating cam 28. Should the detecting finger 14 drop, its other end 17 releases a spring- controlled arm 18, which brings a nose 24 into the path of an extension 23 of the ejector 19, which is therefore held in the position shown. A faulty packet thus passes the ejecting position and does not enter the collator. Moreover a link 21 connected to the ejector brings a shield 20 into such a position that the pawl 10 cannot engage the ratchet wheel 13. A bump 32 on a rotating cam 27 co-operates with a roller 26 to restore the arm 18 to its original position.
